Hulu released a trailer for its upcoming television adaptation of Candice Carty-Williams’ Queenie.
Candice Carty-Williams’ debut novel, published in 2019 by Scout Press/Simon & Schuster, follows the title character, a 25-year-old woman in London, as she navigates work and romance while trying to find herself. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus wrote of the book, “A black Bridget Jones, perfectly of the moment.”
Carty-Williams is the series’ creator and showrunner; she also serves as an executive producer. The title role is played by Dionne Brown (Criminal Record), with other cast members including Samuel Adewunmi (Secret Invasion) and singer-songwriter Bellah, making her acting debut.
The trailer opens with Queenie preparing for a gynecological exam. “How long is this going to take?” The doctor replies, “I’m afraid it’s going to take as long as it needs. So what do you do?”
“Isn’t it enough that she can see inside me?” Queenie asks in a voiceover. “Does she need to know about my day job as well?”
Later, Queenie is seen having dinner with her white boyfriend and his family. One of his family members, an older woman, says, “If you two had children, they will be the color of milky coffee. But they will be half-caste.”
“Hopefully you’ll be dead and gone long before you even get to meet it,” Queenie replies.
Queenie is set to premiere on June 7.
