Amanda Brugel is the latest addition to the cast of Apple’s television adaptation of Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter, Deadline reports.
Brugel, the Canadian actor known for her roles in series including Orphan Black, Kim’s Convenience, and The Handmaid’s Tale, will have a recurring role in the series.
Crouch’s novel, published in 2016 by Crown, follows a man who is kidnapped and wakes up in an alternate reality, where the life he had known before never existed. A critic for Kirkus called the book “suspenseful, frightening, and sometimes poignant—provided the reader has a generously willing suspension of disbelief.”
Brugel joins a cast that also includes Joel Edgerton (The Underground Railroad), Jennifer Connelly (Requiem for a Dream), Jimmi Simpson (The Man Who Fell to Earth), Oakes Fegley (The Fabelmans), Alice Braga (The Suicide Squad), and Dayo Okeniyi (Rise).
Crouch will write the series. He previously wrote some of the episodes of Wayward Pines, based on his trilogy of science fiction thriller novels, and of Good Behavior, an adaptation of his 2016 novel. Crouch and Edgerton are among the show’s executive producers.
The first three episodes of Dark Matter will be directed by Jakob Verbruggen, who previously helmed episodes of Black Mirror and The Alienist. According to IMDb, other directors on the series will include Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me), Logan George (Servant), and Celine Held (Modern Love).
Brugel shared news of her casting on Instagram, writing, “This cast is bonkers. Our showrunner @blakecrouch1 is an actual genius. I’m a very lucky girl.”
