The Golden Globe nominations were announced on Monday, with The Power of the Dog leading the field for movies and television series based on books.
Jane Campion’s film, adapted from Thomas Savage’s 1967 novel, earned seven nominations, including ones for drama film, director, screenplay, actor in a drama (Benedict Cumberbatch), supporting actress in a drama (Kirsten Dunst), and supporting actor in any film (Kodi Smit-McPhee).
Dune, based on Frank Herbert’s legendary science fiction novel, scored three nominations, for drama film, director, and original score, while the film adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s The Lost Daughter received bids for director (Maggie Gyllenhaal) and actress in a drama (Olivia Colman).
Other literary film adaptations to earn nominations included movies based on Sara Gay Forden’s The House of Gucci (actress in a drama, Lady Gaga); Nella Larsen’s Passing (supporting actress in any film, Ruth Negga); J.R. Moehringer’s The Tender Bar (supporting actor in any film, Ben Affleck); and Haruki Murakami’s short story “Drive My Car” (non-English language film).
Literary adaptations were also represented in the television category, with limited series based on books earning a handful of nominations. Chief among those were the filmed miniseries versions of Stephanie Land’s memoir Maid (limited series; limited series actress, Margaret Qualley; TV supporting actress, Andie MacDowell) and Beth Macy’s Dopesick (limited series; TV supporting actress, Kaitlyn Dever; limited series actor, Michael Keaton).
The winners of the Golden Globes will be announced at a televised ceremony on Jan. 9, 2022.
