Quirky, fresh, and full of humor.
A girl comes of age in a Britain that’s devoid of magic in this graphic novel retelling of Arthurian legend in which the tales of the past have a bearing on the protagonist’s destiny.
After she’s named Young Hag by her grandmother, Ancient Crone, the girl learns that she, her grandmother, and her mother (Nearly Wizened One) are “the last real witches in Britain.” They have been without magic, however, ever since the paths between the Otherworld, or the Land of Faerie, and the human world were blocked long ago by the Lady of the Lake. But when they come across a changeling baby, Ancient Crone knows it means that a door somewhere has been opened. Thus begins a quest to find the door, restore the balance between the worlds, right certain wrongs that Ancient Crone is responsible for, and exchange the changeling for the missing baby sister of Tom, a human boy. As they journey on their quest, Ancient Crone tells them tales of Merlin, the Lady of the Lake, King Arthur, Morgan le Fay, and Lancelot, as well as other legends that have a direct bearing on their family and quest. The storytelling sparkles with irreverent humor, and the characters’ irrepressible personalities jump off the pages with joyful visual flourishes. Greenberg’s characters are diverse in skin tone, one of the many refreshing touches to this charming story within a story.

An action-packed tale for those thirsty for more superhero stories.
Grammy Award–winning artist Keys co-authors a YA superhero graphic novel bearing the title of her hit song.
Smart, quiet 14-year-old Loretta “Lolo” Wright struggles to stand up for herself until, on what should be a routine trip to a convenience store, her 16-year-old brother, James, is mistakenly accused of stealing by the police. When the officer slams her brother to the ground, Lolo’s powers manifest for the first time. Meanwhile, Michael Warner, who lives in the same Brooklyn housing projects as the Wrights, is rejected from the football team for being too small. He develops exceptional fighting abilities and shortly afterward gets involved in working for a drug dealer named Skin. When Skin sees a video of Lolo levitating the cop who assaulted James, he wants to recruit her as well, and he tries to extort protection money from Lolo’s dad, who owns a moving business. Lolo must convince Michael to choose a different path; it’s only by working together that they can defeat Skin. Featuring dizzying shifts among multiple perspectives, this full-color graphic novel presents vibrant, expressive characters set against mostly simple, bright backgrounds, with extreme violence depicted in gory detail. The narrative briefly explores class issues and racial stereotypes, but while the setup is intriguing, the momentum fizzles and the pieces never quite come together. Most main characters are Black; Skin reads as White, and secondary characters appear racially diverse.

A captivating read for teens, especially those who enjoy e-sports.
A talented gamer hides her identity and competes in an e-sports tournament.
Sixteen-year-old Vicky Tan lives in the shadow of her older brother, Virgil, an e-sports champion and her legal guardian. Virgil always speaks for her, believes she hates video games, and chooses food she doesn’t like, making it hard to communicate with him. Little does he know, Vicky has a secret: She not only loves playing Xenith Orion, the game he also plays, she’s extremely talented and dreams of one day playing on stage and winning a tournament. Between her brother’s unpredictability and the harassment and scrutiny women face in the male-dominated field, Vicky prefers playing as Aegis, her powerful alter ego. When the game developers announce an open tournament, Vicky and some new friends have the chance to realize their dreams. This is an emotion-filled story of family, friendship, growth, and identity based on a popular webcomic. Even readers unfamiliar with gaming will be able to enjoy it, as it includes enough explanation and background information. As the story develops, the misogynistic tendencies of the e-sports world are exposed, bringing awareness to the issue. Virgil and Vicky’s sibling relationship also portrays the fine line between being protective and overbearingly toxic. Vicky and Virgil are cued Chinese American; there is a diverse cast of secondary characters.
